Orchard soils can be turned around

Australian soils go hard in orchards. This is because they are not well structured, unlike the most productive soils of the world which remain loose, soft and porous.

The report Soil Management for Australian Irrigated Horticulture, however, contains descriptions of practices to implement a system using rye grass to maintain or enhance soil structure. Rye grass assists by producing rhizosheaths of soil around its roots to increase porosity.
