2007/08 IAL/NPSI TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP REPORT
Water policy in Australia is undergoing considerable and unprecedented change. Most recently, the emphasis on the sustainable management of water resources in the Murray Darling Basin has seen a shift of control from the States to the Commonwealth. The declining availability of water and the subsequent approaches taken by governments have come under increasing scrutiny from the public. Indeed, the actions associated with water policy in Australia, particularly water used for irrigated agriculture, have (more)...
Resilience, vulnerability and adaptive capacity are terms increasingly used in rural policy, but rarely defined or converted into practical measures that support policy design and implementation. Adaptive capacity measures based on rural livelihoods analysis have been developed and trialled using ABARE data for broadacre industries. This paper provides a preliminary assessment of the potential to expand the application to all agricultural industries and to broaden the range of (more)...

This project was designed to achieve an improved level of adoption of ecological risk assessment and risk management methods in the Australian irrigation industry and in regulatory agencies. Adoption of risk-based approaches is considered to be vital if the industry is to achieve its goal of long-term sustainability.
This project will deliver a framework for use by policy makers, regulators, managers, and investors to ensure irrigation is developed in a sustainable manner across northern Australia. Stage I of the project will involve development of the full project team, key client/stakeholder/collaborative network, and detailed work plan and budget. Stage II will involve carrying out the work plan agreed to in Stage I.
Early in 1997, the Land and Water Resources R&D Corporation (LWRRDC) decided to experiment with the application of the process of foresighting across a range of its programs. Its purpose in this
